CompTIA A+ Troubleshooting: What to Do Before You Replace the Hardware

A laptop is slow, freezes when several applications are open and sometimes fails to join Wi-Fi. Is the answer a new laptop? Possibly — but the symptoms alone do not justify that conclusion.

CompTIA A+ scenarios reward careful diagnosis. In real support work, the same habit saves time, money and frustration for the person waiting on a fix.

Define the problem before choosing a solution

Ask when the fault began and whether it follows a recent update, new application, location change or hardware event. Separate the symptoms: slowness and wireless failures might share a cause, or they might be unrelated.

Reproduce the issue where possible. If the laptop slows only when a particular programme runs, that is useful evidence. If every device in the room loses Wi-Fi at the same time, the laptop may not be the source of the wireless problem.

Check simple causes first

For a slow system, inspect available storage, memory pressure, running processes and signs of unwanted software. For Wi-Fi, verify that the correct network is selected, the wireless interface is enabled and other devices can connect. Record each finding before making a change.

The goal is not to avoid replacing hardware at all costs. It is to replace a component when the evidence points to that component. Swapping parts without a diagnosis can create new faults and leave the original one unresolved.

Test one change at a time

Suppose you discover that storage is almost full. Freeing space and checking performance is a controlled test. If you also change the Wi-Fi driver, remove software and reset the network at the same time, you may fix the issue without knowing which change mattered — or create a new issue you cannot trace.

Once you have a likely cause, plan an appropriate fix, consider its impact, and verify the original symptom afterwards. Explain the outcome to the user in plain language and document the steps taken.

Turn wrong answers into better judgement

When reviewing an A+ practice question, ask why the tempting alternative was premature. Was there a missing test? Did it assume the wrong scope? Did it solve a symptom without addressing the cause? Your revision notes should capture that decision point.
